The Central Bank of Nigeria with its head office in Abuja is the central bank and apex monetary authority of Nigeria. It acts as a banker of last resort and financial adviser to the federal government.
CBN controls, monitors, regulates the financial activities of all commercial banks and other financial institutions in Nigeria.
Without the CBN operational standards, banks would be double the figure given in this list.
Some years back, before bank consolidation in Nigeria, the number of banks was on the high side.
Presently only banks with solid financial backbone, which also satisfy CBN operational standards are allowed to operate in Nigeria. They are grouped into commercial, non-interest and Merchant banks.

As explained earlier there are three types of banks in Nigeria which are commercial, merchant, and non-interest banks.
Some of the commercial banks have a license for national operation, while some are approved by the CBN to operate commercial banking activities with international authorization.
Similarly, there are also banks that are given commercial banking license with regional authorization by the CBN.
Jaiz Bank and TAJ Bank Limited is the only non-interest bank in Nigeria.
There are several merchant banks in Nigeria license with national authorization, while some other financial institutions are operating as financial holding companies in Nigeria.
