What are the types of poultry farming?
When it comes to poultry farming in Nigeria, the most commonly farmed birds are chicken; broiler precisely.
So, for most people chicken is what immediately comes to mind. While it is certainly the most common type of poultry raised in Nigeria, it is not the only kind as there are several other poultry birds.
Below is a list of all the poultry birds you can raise:
- Chicken (Broiler/Fryer. Roaster. Capon. Fowl).
- Duck.
- Goose.
- Pigeon.
- Turkey
- Ostriches
How to decide between meat or egg production in a poultry farm
This is usually a problem if you don’t have the funds to produce both meat and eggs. While both are profitable the expenses for producing meat or eggs are not the same. Therefore, someone might be asking this question Should I produce meat or egg?
Based on my experience from raising birds. I would say it is relatively low in terms of expenses to produce meat instead of eggs.
Broilers are in high demand in Nigeria. As a result, many poultry farmers raise them. Also, broilers grow fast and can be supplied to eateries from six weeks upwards.
You can easily practice small scale business; by raising broilers from the comfort of your home; if you don’t have the funds to acquire a location.
Lastly, it is easy to control the pollution from broilers compare to layers producing the eggs.
