If you own a bank account then you probably must have heard about BVN. Because registering your BVN is now a must in Nigeria if you really want to operate a bank account.
You can easily use USSD code on your mobile phone to check your BVN details online. Keep reading to learn how.
What’s BVN number

BVN is an acronym for Bank Verification Number. It is a biometric identification number that was introduced into the banking sector by the CBN to curb fraudulent banking activities in Nigeria.
The Nigeria federal government through the ministry of finance has ordered banks to block any NUBAN number that is not linked to a BVN.
Therefore as the name implies BVN is a number giving to you after you have done your biometric verification in the bank you open an account with.
The BVN number is an 11-digit number that will be attached to your bank account details and will be sent to all banks in the country. This means that your Bank Verification Number together with your bank account details are visible to all banks in Nigeria irrespective of the type you deal with.

How to check BVN details on phone
If you have misplaced your BVN then there is no cause for alarm as there is a way to check your details online.
You can easily retrieve or check your BVN details online on your mobile phone irrespective of the type of phone. You also don’t need an internet connection, as long as the phone can send and receive messages, you are good to go.
To check your BVN number dial *565*0#. This code works on all the network service providers such as MTN, GLO, AIRTEL, and 9mobile.
So irrespective of the bank you bank with, *565*0# is the universal code for checking/retrieving your BVN details.
However, If you are a GTB customer here is how to check your BVN online. Simply dial *737*6*1#
Note: You can only check your BVN details with the line you used in enrolling for BVN. In other words, you can only dial the code on the line you used for registering BVN. So don’t register BVN with MTN sim and try to use your GLO sim to check your BVN details with *565*0# because it won’t work.
How to register for your BVN
To register for a BVN number you have to visit the bank you have opened an account with; Speak with a customer care representative and ask for the BVN section and follow the procedure below:
- Get a BVN enrollment form;
- Enter your correct information in the enrollment form before submitting the form back to the enrollment officer of the bank;
- You will be asked to present your biometric data such as fingerprints and face capturing;
- Collect your enrollment receipt from the enrollment officer and leave the bank.
- You will get a short message from the bank representative containing your BVN number within 24hours.
Note: Ensure you update your data where you registered your BVN is there is any change in your data.

The code doesn't work how can I do now
Dial the code on the line you used in enrolling for your BVN. It won't work on any sim you didn't use in registring for BVN.
